Surprisingly I liked the book for the reason that negative reviewers did not...and that was Sarah Woods. I am a voracious reader who loves a good mystery but it gets a little tiring having perfect, moral characters, all the time. I found it a nice change to have a leading lady who was a little unstable, a little immoral, and not always honest. The book was an easy, well constructed read, with believable dialogue, but there was nothing unique; if Sarah was perfectly correct I think the book would have rated it a three star.

However, I can definitely see how Sarah could be distasteful to some, so as a mystery reader if you prefer stalwart, faithful characters that always do the right thing, stay away. For me though, it was refreshing and I could see this series developing into something more meaty. I am inclined to buy another. Thanks!

An Appointment With Murder Sarah Woods Mystery Book 1 edition by Jennifer L Jennings John Simon Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I may have called it a simple little murder mystery but that's only because it didn't need psychics or paranormal plots to solve the mystery or make it entertaining. When the murderer was revealed, it caught me totally off guard. However, in hindsight there were some subtle hints that I should have picked up on but didn't. I consider that a good murder mystery. It was a straight forward, easy read. A nice book for a rainy afternoon. Actually, I read it during TV commercials(yes, some of us still have commercials) in about 3 night. After I finished it, I told my husband about it and a day or two later he tells me he finished the book last night. He also thought it was a pretty good book.
This is a short book. I finished it in one sitting. So, I guess it held my attention enough to get me through the book. I admit to having a bias against sleuths who are personally unlikeable - as I found Sarah Woods to be. One example is that she blackmails her psychiatrist into perscribing pills. I don't mean I can't identify with human frailties, but it's really hard to care what happens to Sarah. As other reviewers have said, Sarah's personal dramas seem to distract from rather than add to the story line. The writing is on the simplistic side. For a quick read at the beach, it's not bad. But it's not memorable. I doubt I will read any more in this series.
Sarah getting her massage room ready for a client, to find her secretary has been murdered. Uncovering what really happened, and what the secretary was really doing, working for her, gives up a great plot. Though anguish about his sister’s death. Sparks fly for him and Sarah. This is the beginning of change for Sarah with Carter coming into the picture, also.
Massage, Masturbation, Murder. When Sarah finds her assistant has been strangled in the short time she was in the back with a client she doesn't know who she can trust. Who would have done such a horrible thing? Was it a random killing or someone she knew? Although the police are investigating Sarah can't seem to stay out of it and embarks on a journey to find the killer.

A fast paced story that keeps you guessing until the very end. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to more from this author.

Highly recommend.
An Appointment with Murder ( A Sarah Woods Mystery) is a short story/novella written by Jennifer L Jennings. This is the first installment of the Sarah Woods mystery series.
Sarah owns a legitimate massage therapy business. One evening while staying late for a regular customer, Sarah's new assistant, Beth, is murdered. A murder could damage Sarah's business and give her a bad name, especially since the gossip has already started to fly. So, Sarah works with the police and Beth's friends and family to find out the shocking truth of who killed Beth and why. ( Beth's brother, Max,could make an appearance in the next book, and that would be fine with me.)
Sarah's personal life is in a rut. Her teenage son no longer needs her as much, and her husband is inattentive. Sarah needs some excitement in her life. After Beth's killer is caught, with the help of Max and a rebel private detective, Sarah may have found a new niche. So, stay tuned.

I really like this mystery and I hope the series takes off! It's a short book, but I'm not big on filler. I like the story to move along at a nice clip. This book gets right to the point in both action and dialogue. I could intentify with Sarah personally. Her feelings were real, and the challenges she faces can be related to. You can't help but like her. The mystery part kept me turning pages trying to guess who the killer was. The mystery is solved in a way that doesn't insult your intelligence, and and I didn't guess who the culprit was!!
I do hope there are many more Sarah Woods mysteries to come! I can't wait for the next one. If you like mysteries, you'll love this one.
An Appointment With Murder by Jennifer L. Jennings is the first in the Sarah Woods Mystery series. This is a debut novel for this author and I found the mystery to be a very good one. Jennings had me fooled as to who the perpetrator of the crime in Sarah Woods' therapeutic massage business was. Sarah had hired Beth Stevens , a young woman about to be married, as her receptionist, and she was turning out to be very good at the job. That didn't last too long, because while Sarah was preparing the room for a client and then went back out to speak to Beth, Sarah found Beth dead at her desk.

The pathway to finding out who committed this crime and others that take place is going to be hard for Sarah, who has an inattentive husband and a teenage son at home. Everyone needs her attention at times, and when she meets Beth's brother, Max, her attention gets focused on him a little more than she's comfortable with.

There are several persons of interest who may have had reason to kill Beth, but figuring out which one was made difficult. Jennings' next Sarah Woods Mystery is already on my , ready to read since I enjoyed this one so much.
